My Nokia N900 with original Nokia CP-408 case |
When my ever reliable Sony Ericsson P1i started dying out on me, I started scouting for a would be replacement phone. With so many cellphones to choose from, I trimmed down my list to that which will serve my purpose (and of course, fit my budget). I came across a variety of smart phones...SE, Black Berry, iPhone, HTC and Nokia.
So which is the smartest choice? With iPhone 4's availability, PRICE and warranty... it is definitely out of the equation for now (though I am really drooling about this phone), feature wise and with budget restriction, I only had to choose between Black Berry 9700 and Nokia N900.
After going through the features of both phones, I decided to go for Nokia's flagship phone, The N900....

Nokia N900 with slide out keyboard open |
Though a lot have been said about this phone (negative that is) here are my thoughts about a few:
SMS in portrait mode....
This is one of the features that is lacking with the N900 (though there is a 3rd party software that you can install for you to be able to text in portrait mode, there are certain limitations to the apps) many think that this is one important feature that Nokia forgot to have on the N900, since this is very useful when you have to text using one hand, most especially when driving...BUT WHY WOULD YOU TEXT WHILE DRIVING ANYWAY???
To my opinion, the breeze of texting with its on-screen and full qwerty slide out keyboard compensates for the lack of ability to text in portrait mode...
Resistive touch screen...
An old technology compared to the newer capacitive touch screen which supports multi-touch, the resistive touch screen is very much accurate compared to capacitive. It supports also the use of stylus or any inanimate objects, while the capacitive requires a conductor to function i.e. the human body, so using your phone with gloves on, would not work with capacitive. Resistive is made of plastic which is more prone to scratches but more durable, while capacitive is glass which of course is more resistant to scratches but more susceptible to breaking. There is really more to the Pros and Cons, but in the end, it will really depend on the user's preference.
Battery life...
With the N900's powerful processing speed and tons of installable applications, It is more appropriate to categorize it as a tablet computer with a phone function, than the other way around. With this to consider, it is really easy to think that this hand held computer will really eat up a lot of power. So the question about the battery life being so short, is pretty much acceptable. But of course, I wish it could be better.
The verdict, I still am a fan of this phone and really happy with it. I will keep it as long as....
Somebody out there gives me a 32GB iPhone 4g for FREE...hahahaha
